Description
The great guns of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, were the Rodman Cannons. This photograph is an example of the heaviest cannon ever to be mounted at Fort McHenry. This huge cannon one time fired exploding projectiles weighing 440 pounds.
Mass produced, these guns represented the "coming of age" of America's iron industry. A special process developed by Thomas J. Rodman enabled the cast iron to cool from the inside out which gave them durability and also their distinctive bottle-shaped appearance.
Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be, these cannons became obsolete within a few years of their being installed. They were never fired in anger at Fort McHenry - only being used for ceremonies such as the Fourth of July and Defenders Day.
If you decide to purchase one of these prints or prints on canvas, where will you display it?
