Description
The Hanover Street Bridge, crossing the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, connects the community of South Baltimore and Port Covington to the south shore communities of Cherry Hill and Brooklyn. Shown here is the "draw span" of the bridge - the part that makes it a drawbridge.
The bridge has been carrying traffic on South Hanover Street, Maryland Route 2, for more than a century. It is a type of drawbridge known as a bascule bridge and is one of the few remaining in the region. Since 1916 it has been serving as a southern gateway to Baltimore and is known for the beautiful supporting arches that span the Patapsco. In 1993 it was renamed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge.
The Hanover Street bridge in nearly 2,300 feet long and carries five lanes of traffic. There are two northbound and two southbound lanes - with a "reversing" center lane that changes with traffic flow needs. Waters flowing under the bridge soon reach the Chesapeake Bay after passing the Port Covington waterfront and Fort McHenry.
