Description
What looks like a red sunrise or sunset is actually the moon rising over the Atlantic Ocean and Coastal Delaware just north of Fenwick Island, DE. The silo-shaped structure is names Fire Control Tower #1 and is one of a series of such observation towers that served to protect Coastal Delaware from attack or invasion during World War II.
These towers would mark the location coordinates of ships and send those coordinates to the "big guns" at Fort Miles so defensive shells could be fired at the enemy, if so needed. Hence, they are named Fire Control Towers.
This photograph bu Bill Swartwout Photography shows FCT #1 as it might have appeared as a lone outpost some 75 years in the past. There is, indeed, a good bit of history involved with these towers and Coast Artillery of WWII.
