Artist's Description
The Horsehead Nebula (B33 or Bernard 33) was first photographed in 1888. I was eventually given the familiar name of Horsehead Nebula because of its resemblance to a horse's head. The nebula, itself, is located in the constellation Orion and is found just to the south of the star Alnitak, which is farthest east on Orion's Belt.
To make that point, photographer Bill Swartwout used one of his photographs of one the the wild horses of Assateague Island to illustrate that likeness. The Assateague Pony pictures here is named Sarah's Sweet Tea and in officially known as N2BHS-O. Sweet Tea is a sorrel colt born in 2016 but also has a similarity, in shape and color to the Horsehead Nebula. This wild horse can be found roaming freely throughout the Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park.
Background image of the Horsehead Nebula is in the public domain, credit: NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA).
About Bill Swartwout
"For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move." Robert Louis Stevenson... My photography reflects such wanderlust. I record images of places to which I wander and distractions along the way. I love to share my joy of living at the beach and our travels afar, bringing you photographic art that reflects what I see. I have had my work published for more than half a century, starting as a junior reporter for a local newspaper in 1964. I have been involved with industrial photography, wedding photography and real estate photography but my love has always been landscape and seascape photography. Today I concentrate strictly on photography as art. Purchase one of my pieces to...
