Major-General Samuel Smith (1752-1839) keeps watch over the Baltimore Inner Harbor from high atop Federal Hill Park. General Smith was a hero of both Wars for Independence. He served at Long Island, White Plains, Brandywine, Fort Mifflin, Valley Forge and Baltimore.

This monument on Federal Hill was erected by the Star-Spangled Banner Commission, James H. Preston, Mayor, President of the Commission, 1917.
