Major-General Samuel Smith (1752-1839) keeps watch over the Baltimore Inner Harbor from high atop Federal Hill Park. General Smith was a hero of both Wars for Independence. He served at Long Island, White Plains, Brandywine, Fort Mifflin, Valley Forge and Baltimore.
Under his command the attack by the British upon Baltimore by land and by sea, September 12-14, 1814, was repulsed. He was a member of Congress, President of the U.S. Senate, Secretary of the Navy and Mayor of Baltimore.
This monument on Federal Hill was erected by the Star-Spangled Banner Commission, James H. Preston, Mayor, President of the Commission, 1917.
