Description
This doorway fruit fan was found on St. Georges Street in the old town historic district of St. Augustine, Florida. The arch of fruits over the door indicates that travelers are welcome. A pineapple (Ananas comosus) posted on a door is a simple symbol of welcome. While some may think of the apple as the forbidden fruit, others believe apples to be a sign of love and sexuality.
Some may call this a "Williamsburg Style" door way - but St. Augustine (1565) was here about three generations before Williamsburg was founded (1638).
