This Black Crowned Night Heron ruffles his feathers, exhibiting the typical behavior of a "Crouch Stance" as a warning to stay away from his nest. While this Heron was photographed at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, this protective behavior is seen in nature, in the wild, as well.
When a bird he crouches low with his head pointed forward, tail feathers flared, body feathers ruffled or "hackled," and exhibiting pupil dilation - he is one angry guy. It would be wise to NOT approach a bird while he is exhibiting this behavior, He is basically saying, "I am big and mean and mad. If you come any closer to my nest I will hurt you!"
