Description
The Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware, is a re-creation of the ship which brought the first Europeans to settle the Delaware Valley in 1638. The original, the "Key to Kalmar," was purchased from a Dutch shipbuilder by the city of Kalmar, Sweden. As was typical of ships of the that era, the Kalmar Nyckel has many beautiful carvings including the lion on the bowsprit. The gilded figurehead, "Leo the Lion," as he is affectionately called today, shows his fierce teeth and is painted in period-correct hues.
Since its launch in 1997, the "modern day" Kalmar Nyckel teaches visitors about sailing in the 17th Century and the settlement of the "New World." The crew, mostly volunteers, sail the the ship in much the same as as it sailed nearly 400 years ago.
The Kalmar Nyckel visited the Baltimore Inner Harbor during Maryland's Star Spangled Celebration in early September, 2014. This photograph was captured during the 200th anniversary of The Star Spangled Banner.
