Description
Oftern called Mighty Mac or Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge connects the main part of Michigan to the Upper Peninsula and crosses the Straits of Mackinac, which connects two of the Great Lakes - Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Mighty Mac is among the longest suspension bridges in the world today. The Straits allow Great Lakes shipping, cargo and ore carriers, to travel among the states connected to the Great Lakes.
In this photograph by Bill Swartwout, looking south, Lake Michigan lies to the right and Lake Huron to the left. The town of Mackinaw, Michigan is at the southern shore and attracts thousands of visitors a year.
