Description
"Pleased to meet you," say Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck, of Northside Park in Ocean City, Maryland. If you have ever "fed the ducks" at a park, chances are good that Mallards were in the fray. They are common to much of North America and rather easy to spot - with the iridescent green heads of the male.
This photograph, by Bill Swartwout Photography, illustrates the common features of these "dabbling" ducks. Male Mallards have a dark, iridescent-green head and a yellow-orange bill. The gray body is sandwiched between a brown breast and black rear. Females and juveniles are mottled brown with orange-and-brown bills.
