Description
Often called Mighty Mac or Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge connects the main part of Michigan to the Upper Peninsula and crosses the Straits of Mackinac, which connects two of the Great Lakes - Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Mighty Mac is among the longest suspension bridges in the world. The Straits allow Great Lakes shipping, cargo and ore carriers, to travel among the states connected to the Great Lakes.
In this panoramic photograph by Bill Swartwout Photography, looking north, Lake Michigan lies to the left and Lake Huron to the right. The town of Mackinaw, Michigan is at the southern shore and St. Ignace is at the northern end of the bridge. Both cities attracts thousands of visitors a year and act as a gateway to the popular Mackinac Island (to the east of the bridge).
