Description
A part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Cape Hatteras Light, in this "expressionism" edit, is a lighthouse on the Outer Banks near the town of Buxton, North Carolina. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country and the tallest of all NC lighthouses. Since 1803 there had been a lighthouse near Cape Hatteras warning mariners of the Diamond Shoals - dangerous shifting sands just under the ocean surface upon whch manh ships wrecked. For over 130 years, 82 known lighthouse keepers proudly kept the light shining to help guide ships to safe passage and help save mariners' lives.
The Cape Hatteras Light Station has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is one of the most recognized of all lights because of the pattern of black and white candy cane style stripes. The lighthouse was move to its current location in 1999 to avoid erosion from the encroaching Atlantic Ocean.
