Description
Gunpowder for Fort McHenry was kept in the Magazine. The term "magazine" comes from French and Arabic, meaning "storehouse." Some historians consider the Magazine to be the most important building in a fort. This one was used to store over 30,000 pounds of black powder - equating to nearly 10 tons of TNT. The Aetna and Bellona Powder Mills, just outside of the city of Baltimore, manufactured the "powder" used at Fort McHenry.
