Description
Heavy seas are confronted by the Royal Caribbean ship, the Grandeur of the Seas, as she travels the North Atlantic skirting the edges of Hurricane Maria in the fall of 2017. The rough seas were not dangerous but did create some motion sickness among the passengers of this ocean liner. May passengers succumbed to seasickness during this voyage and some on-board events had to be cancelled.
This photograph, by (passenger) photographer Bill Swartwout was captured on the 5th deck (of 10 decks) and shows the bow spray created by the ship plowing into a very large wave. While this was not considered a rouge wave (freak waves, monster waves, episodic waves, killer waves, extreme waves, and abnormal waves) it was one of the waves that build upon the periodicity of wave formation. The ship at the time was about 150 miles off the coast of Delaware on its's way back to Baltimore from a visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This is great, Bill -- I'm a fan of rough seas. Just this morning, I was watching the Empress Of The Seas docking at Key West (via a live YouTube cam). Watching the ships arrive and depart is a wonderful part of my daily routine. :-)
Bill Swartwout replied:
Thank you, Wendy. We like to aboard those ships as they are docking and/or leaving.

Nice shot! My first cruise aboard Grandeur in 2002 encountered rough seas like this returning to New Orleans. We were probably 100-200 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi and seas were 12-16' on average with a few 20' waves thrown in occasionally.
Bill Swartwout replied:
Thank you, Richard. Exciting ride, eh? My wife and I are fortunate in that we never get seasick.
