Description
Fort McHenry appears in this photograph as it might have appeared 200 years ago. There is little to see here other than the magnificent fort and, what some may consider, a field of dreams on the outskirts of the city of Baltimore, Maryland.
Often cited as the birthplace of our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, one of the most prominent features is the large flag that flies over the fort. By presidential decree, a flag is flown over the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The size of the flag is changed depending on weather conditions. Francis Scott Key penned the poem that became our National Anthem during the fort's defense of Baltimore during the War of 1812.
