An afternoon sun casts scalloped shadows along a row of dune fence at a crossing to the Atlantic beach at Fenwick Island State Park, Sussex County, Delaware. The sand dunes protect both the beach and the land behind the beach from storms and wind and water action. The fencing out in the country is called snow fence and serves a similar purpose. The fencing disrupts the flow of wind and creates drifts of sand or snow. The sand needs to stay at the beach and does not need to blow away. The dune fence helps keep the sand right here.
If you have been to beaches in the mid-Atlantic you know how prevalent these dune fences are. They can be found at just about every dune crossing, allowing beach-goers access to the beaches without disrupting the natural formation of dunes. If you love the beach as I do you may want a large canvas or framed print to hang in your home - to remind you of being at the beach all year 'round.

I have had my work published for more than half a century, starting as a junior reporter for a local newspaper in 1964. I have been involved with industrial photography, wedding photography and real estate photography but my love has always been landscape and seascape photography. Today I concentrate strictly on photography as art. Purchase one of my pieces to...
