Description
Solid, silent and solitary, these stalwart concrete soldiers survey ships on the sea. The occupants, highly trained soldiers of the 261st Coast Artillery, served to protect the Delaware coast and the entrance to Delaware Bay from incursion or invasion by enemy ships during World War II. The soldiers observed and identified ships on the Atlantic and were trained to coordinate targeting and firing of the big guns at Fort Miles should an enemy be identified.
This is another version of a recent photograph - where post-processing allows me to present the image as it might have appeared 70+ years ago. These are fire Control Towers #3 and #4 and were located (at that time) in the middle of nowhere - near the Atlantic beach many miles south of Fort Miles, Lewes, Delaware. The nearest town today is Dewey Beach, DE, just to the north.
If you like this "old-fashioned color" toned version where would you display it in your home? This would also make a perfect gift for that military history buff in your family. Order yours today.

These towers are always a favorite tourist attraction along the Delaware coast. You have captured them beautifully.
Bill Swartwout replied:
Thank you, Kim. I developed a real interest in them a little over a year ago. Their history and current status are fascinating.
