Description
This 1942 Whirley Crane is backlit by the afternoon sun while standing as a monument to the Industrial Revolution at the entrance to the Baltimore Museum of Industry. This mechanical leviathan dates back to the time of "Rosie the Riverter" and the war effort, when the Bethlehem Steel Fairfield Shipyard used this and many other cranes to help build over 500 Liberty Ships.
Through subsequent owners and its eventual replacement by more modern technology along the Baltimore Harbor and Waterfront, this crane was eventually donated to the BMI. It has since become a landmark structure in South Baltimore, being visible from Interstate 95 as well as downtown in the heart of the city.
If you are a history buff and or a fan of all thing mechanical you will like having a print of this photograph on display in your office or home. Wouldn't it be great for a man cave?
