Description
In this dramatic gold-toned Atlantic Ocean sunrise, what appears to be a "ghost ship" on the horizon is really a freighter appearing to float above the water. The strange apparition-like appearance is because of the mirage effect of reflected light in this early morning photograph.
In addition to the sunrise, one can also see sunbeams, or crepuscular rays of sunlight shining below the clouds. This photograph, by Bill Swartwout Photography, was captured from the deck of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Grandeur of the Seas as it sailed south around Cape Cod on a journey returning from New England and Canada.
