Even in this composite edit with a starry sky, one of the most recognizable icons of Bethany Beach is Chief Little Owl, the Totem Pole monument that stands at the intersection of Garfield Parkway and Route 1.
The 24-foot statue at the downtown entrance to Bethany Beach has been a landmark since 1976. The original was created by sculptor Peter Wolf Toth, a humanitarian who wanted to give thanks to the United States. The sculpture was donated to the Town as part of his “Trail of the Whispering Giants” project. He created more than 50 wooden sculptures of famous Indians and donated at least one to every state.
The original was lost (termites and wind) in 1992 and replaced by another done by Dennis Beach but that only lasted until is succumbed to rot in 2000. The current statue was created by Toth and dedicated in 2002. It is made from a red cedar log and should last another 50-150 years.
