Description
The "Gateway to the Chesapeake Bay" is the oft' considered to be the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that carries car and truck traffic from the Western Shore of Virginia to the ESVA, Virginia' Eastern Shore. This complex structure is nearly 18 miles long and is said to be one of the engineering marvels of the world.
This black and white photograph, by Bill Swartwout Photography, shows the portion of the bridge from the eastern terminus of the easternmost tunnel to the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge in the distance. The photography platform was the deck of Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas during a very rare transit of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in daylight hours.
Originating in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area, the Lucius J. Kellam Jr. Bridge-Tunnel leaves land at Chic's Beach on the Western Shore and ends up at at the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. In completing that journey there are four bridge spans and two tunnels. Large ship traffic entering or departing the Chesapeake Bay cross the complex over one of the two tunnels.
