Description
A part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Cape Hatteras Light is a lighthouse, presented here as a simulated charcoal sketch, is located on the Outer Banks near the town of Buxton, North Carolina. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country and the tallest of all NC lighthouses. It was designed and located to help sailors in navigating the dangerous Diamond Shoals that have claime many a ship over the centuries.
The Cape Hatteras Light Station has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is one of the most recognized of all lights because of the pattern of black and white candy cane style stripes. The lighthouse was move to its current location in 1999 to avoid erosion from the encroaching Atlantic Ocean.
