Description
Emerging from the calyx, this "baby" sunflower is about to meet the world. Sepals (collectively called the calyx) are modified leaves that encase the developing flower.
Standing tall to greet the rays sunshine, sunflowers stand tall and reaches high into the sky. The golden hues of sunshine reflected in the petals make this wonderful yellow flower among the most popular flowers of summer. Did you know the the flower petals within a sunflower's cluster are usually in a a spiral pattern?
This single sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., will soon be standing watch over a field of sunflowers on the road between Roxanna and Selbyville in Southern Delaware. Not far from the Atlantic coast, the sun and humidity have these flowers thriving - for you and for me. Wouldn't this be wonderful brightening a room in your home?
