Description
Granted, it might take a bit of imagination to "see" the walrus in the green sea grass over this old piling on the beach at Cape Charles, Virginia. However, the likeness was pointed out the photographer, Bill Swartwout, the first time he showed this photograph to some people.
So, if this is not really a walrus basking in the sun on a sandy beach - what is it? The rotting remains of several dozens of pilings on this section of beach are rumored to have once made up a large wharf supporting a casino on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay at Cape Charles, VA. This particular remnant of 125 year old piling is draped in sea grasses and moss brought in from the bay by winds and tide. The more sheltered side is a bit hollowed out an has gathered a variety of shells and other detritus. The result is a natural aquatic "still life" created by Mother Nature.
