Description
The Great Egret (Ardea alba) is found in or near wetlands and marshes in many part of the Americas. This beautiful example was fishing for lunch in a marsh at the Assateague Island National Seashore.
Great Egrets seem to prefer living near just about any water body that is relatively calm. Examples are streams, lakes, muddy areas, ponds and, in this exapmle, the brackish water marshes of Assateague Island.
This full color photograph was captured by Bill Swartwout Photography on a trip to visit the Assateague Ponies - wild horses - of Assateague Island. It illustrates that many other beautiful creatures live there, too - not just the ponies.
