Description
Mary Young Pickersgill is best known as the seamstress who made the Star Spangled Banner, the 15-star US Flag that flew over Fort McHenry at the Battle of Baltimore near the end of the War of 1812. Mary's mother, Rebecca, was a flag maker during the Revolutionary War so the profession was passed along in the family.
The wooden-slat flag in this historical display at Fort McHenry in Baltimore describes some of the history of the flag-making task. The 30' by 40' flag that flew over the fort the morning after the battle gave inspiration to Francis Scott Key to write the poem that eventually became our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
