Description
The Stars and Stripes flies over the parade ground in the central area of the star fort at the Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Maryland. Fort McHenry defeated the British invasionary force at the Battle of Baltimore through the night bombardment of September 13-14, 1814, near the end of the War of 1812.
It was when dawn broke in the morning - "the dawn's early light" - Francis Scott Key could see the flag still flying over the fort. He was inspired by the sight to begin penning the words to The Star Spangled Banner that, of course, became the national anthem of our United States of America.
